10 DAYS OF ONAM
We Keralites have our own calendar known as Kollavarsham, this solar and sidereal Hindu calendar starts with Chingam, the first month of the Malayalam calendar. Each year it falls in either August or September. Onam is one of the most important festivals for a Malayali, is celebrated in Chingam (from ‘Simham’ or Lion, named after the constellation Leo). There are 4 days of Onam out of which Thiruvonam (Thiru Onam) is celebrated on the 2nd day. Thiruvonam meaning the ‘sacred Onam day’ is the most important day of Onam.
We Keralites are getting ready for the Onam festival on September 4th this year and our festivities actually begin 10 days before Thiruvonam. Let’s take a look at the detailed description of Onam celebration days starting from Atham.
Atham - August 25th This is the day Asura king Mahabali is believed to have started his preparations to come and visit his kingdom. The day begins with people taking an early bath and offering prayers in the local temple. The set breakfast for Atham as well as for the rest of the Onam days is the same, steamed bananas with fried pappadam (pappad). Swings (Oonjal) decorated with flowers will be seen slung from high branches on most homes and youngsters have fun with swinging and singing. Floral arrangements or more popularly known as Pookalam will be laid out on the ground in front of every home to welcome Mahabali. Traditionally, the pookalams are to have 10 rings in total by the time Onam comes. With each ring representing a Hindu God. Only yellow flowers are used for the first layer of pookalam on Atham. However, most modern individuals don’t know the difference and use any colors they like on pookalam designs.
Chithira - August 26th People will visit temples to seek blessings and after they’ll add more rings and colors to their pookalam. Mostly orange and creamy yellow colors are added to please the gods. Everyone comes together to create their pookalam to showcase their creativity. In most homes, boys will take care of the pookalam designs while girls decide the colors and layout the flowers in each ring. Creating the best pookalam in the neighborhood is more like a competition since everyone wants to please Mahabali by creating the best pookalam.
Chodhi - August 27th This is a buzz filled day for everyone as everyone has a long list of items to be bought including gifts for loved ones. It’s more like a shopping day and every market/shopping malls will be filled with people buying items off their list including new clothes, jewelry, and gifts. Even the servants get a gift on this auspicious day. With the ever-increasing hype for the festival, shopkeepers come up with innovative incentives to attract the customers who are in the mood to spend. Attractive discounts and gift vouchers is a common thing for Onam shopping.
Vishakam - August 28th On the fourth day, the excitement grows even bigger as there are only a few days left for Thiruvonam. Final arrangements and shopping can be seen everywhere and preparations for Onasadya will have started from this day onwards. Preparation of various types of pickles will start now because by the day of Onam all the spices will have given great flavours to the pickles. New designs will be seen in the pookalam with flowers of different colors and shapes. Kids will collect flowers in their home to make pookalam. Women sing along as they make the pookalam. Overall it’s a joyous day for everyone.
Anizham - August 29th On the fifth day, a grand boat race will be conducted called Vallamkali. This popular competition happens on the banks of the river Pamba at Aranmula. Many tourists come to witness this great spectacle with a large number of long snake-like boats called Chundan Vallams participating in Vallamkali. Each boat will be decorated beautifully and will be oared by hundreds of men dressed in traditional wears. They sing songs or vanchipattu as they row. Even though it may not seem like it, a single mistake by one of the men in the boat can cause the boat to overturn hence it’s a dangerous race that needs a lot of concentration and teamwork.
Thriketa - August 30th On the sixth day, cultural programmes and social gatherings are organised by various cultural societies all over the state. People of all religions, caste and creed take part in these events. There are no set rituals marked for the day of Thriketa. It marks the time for homecoming for people staying away from their families for various reasons; Onam is the time for the family get-together. The joy of festivity doubles in the company of family members and close friends. The Pookalam gets a more beautiful design and fresh flowers.
Moolam - August 31st On the seventh day, the shops will be loaded with goods and there will be hustle and bustle everywhere as excited people do their last bit of shopping. What is even more clear on the faces of millions of people of Kerala is the spirit of joy and happiness. A year-long wait is going to be over and there will be celebrations all around. Pookalam is made in a new design with kondattam (gaiety) on this day with the most beautiful flowers. For Maveli is coming and there is merriment everywhere.
Pooradam - September 1st & 2nd On the eighth day, devotees create clay idols in the shape of small pyramids called a ‘Ma’. As the idol is created on the day of Pooradam, it is also called Poorada Uttigal. Each Ma is decorated with flowers. On Pooradam size of the pookalam gets bigger due to an addition of design with a different flower. Massive house cleaning starts as people want to ensure that everything looks neat and tidy when the Onathappan arrives.
Uthradam - September 3rd On the ninth day, there is merriment all around as people prepare to welcome the spirit of King Mahabali. It is a public holiday on that day. Some people also call Uthradam as the first Onam and the next day Thiruvonam as the second Onam. Houses are cleaned up on this day and people get charged up to take part in the events to take place on the following day. Pookalam is given a nice design with new and special flowers on this day.
Thiruvonam - September 4th The enchanting state of Kerala reverberates with the chants of Onam wishes, as people exchange warm greetings of the occasion on the most important day of the festival. People believe that it is on Thiruvonam that the spirit of legendary King Mahabali visits the state of Kerala. Activities begin early in the morning. People clean their house, take early bath, wear new clothes and participate in special prayers organised in individual homes and then in local temples. A grand Pookalam is prepared to welcome Mahabali with clay mounds in the shape of pyramids representing Lord Vishnu and Mahabali placed in front of the Pookalam. At noon the grand feast of Onam called Onasadya is prepared. This strictly vegetarian meal has at least 11 - 13 dishes and is served on a banana leaf. Gifts will be passed on and various cultural events are organised all over the state to mark the day.
There are some rituals also marked for the eleventh and twelfth day called Avittom and Chathayam respectively. But most celebrations get over on the tenth, on the most important day of Thiruvonam.
